LEADERSHIP

The importance of building infallible trust

Trust is crucial to any successful team. It’s something you can build, nurture, break, or lose. If you don’t cultivate trustworthy habits and behaviours at work, it can seriously affect how your team operates. We recently chatted with Valerii, a front-end and back-end Drupal expert at WeAreBrain, to get his thoughts on trust within his team.

Valerii shared a story about a famous monk who said living with snakes and scorpions was easier than working with people. This reflects how tough it can be to trust others, especially when there's a risk of unmet promises. Working in an environment without trust can be incredibly challenging.

In a tech company, for instance, various teams come together every day to brainstorm and create innovative products and services. These sessions involve long discussions, tough decisions, and many tasks assigned to different team members. Without complete trust, your company would struggle to succeed.

So, what exactly is trust? Essentially, it’s confidence in a person’s good faith, decency, and honesty. It’s the hopeful belief that those you depend on will meet your expectations. This voluntary commitment ensures that your rights and interests are protected.

Valerii’s tips for building trust in the workplace include:

❇️ Be reliable: Your team can’t be trustworthy without reliability. Consistently keeping your promises helps create a solid foundation for a successful work environment.

❇️ Be polite: Praise, gratitude, and politeness are vital in every aspect of life. Letting your team know they’re appreciated and respected fosters a polite and trusting atmosphere.

❇️ Ask for forgiveness: Not everything is within our control. Don’t be too proud to ask for forgiveness if you’ve let someone down. Admitting mistakes and apologising helps rebuild trust and makes collaboration more likely.

❇️ Manage expectations: Clearly explaining your expectations is key to a successful working relationship. Try to understand others by seeing situations from their perspective.

❇️ Set clear goals: Having clear goals shows your dedication and inspires others to trust in your abilities. Being ready to follow through on promises and assessing both successes and failures is crucial for growth.

❇️ Care: Show compassion towards others. Demonstrating that you care about your team’s needs, happiness, and wellbeing creates a safe environment where honesty about capabilities and deadlines can flourish.

Summary

For any project to succeed, your team needs to be both competent and cooperative, building trusting relationships that lead to satisfaction and positive outcomes.
